New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
