Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
